Brahma

Information Page:

The Braham in one of the heavy, soft feathered breeds who have an excellent temperament and beautiful appearance. These are a favourite for those who are keen to have a quite, hardy, large breed that lays well and thrives in the colder climates.  There are also limited numbers of bantam Brahma available in Australia.

They are exceptionally quite for a large breed & love to wander through the garden everyday. The Brahma is hardy are happiest when they have lots of room to forage.

This old breed caused a sensation when they first arrived in the U.S.A from India in 1846.  Originally called Brahma-Pootras after the river which divides China & India.  They had been considered all but extinct in Australia after the second world war.

The Brahma are good layers of large tinted brown eggs.  They make excellent broodies & are good mothers.  They are available in the large & bantam size here in Australia, in colours such as Dark, Buff Columbian, Light, White, Black & Gold (Partridge) . With Light & Buff being the main colours available in the large.

They are a heavy breed & should weigh between 4-6kg for males & 3-4kg for females. When viewing this breed, they should have a broad, square & deep body. The feathering, whilst profuse, should be compact & close to the body, unlike the cochin.  The overall shape from the side view should be that of a 'U', with a short back that is flat or slightly hollow.  The tail is of medium length & rising nearly upright.
